Invisible China

This series of photographs was taken during my field research in rural and peri-urban China. "China" brings to me childhood memories of the glittering metropolises of Shanghai and Beijing, robots that deliver food between floors in skyscraper hotels, and VR roller coasters in giant malls. Yet, the dusty streets and thin door curtains I saw during long walks between households tell the story of a different China. Through my photography, I hope to show the side of China that most people don't usually see. In the hidden corner of a country known so much for its wealth and progression, I find a wonderfully candid peek into another type of human experience.

Locations: Zhushan, Hubei; Chengdu, Sichuan; Bipenggou, Sichuan; Ya'an, Sichuan; peri-urban Beijing; various rural villages around Zhushan and Ya'an
